  • the design or anatomy of the tissues of the low back is related to the bony lumbar spine (vertebrae, singular = vertebra), discs between the vertebrae, ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord, nerves, low back muscles, pelvis internal organs, abdomen, and lumbar area skin covering.(Low Back Anatomy)
  • The lumbar spine is designed in such a way that vertebrae are stacked together that provide a movable support structure. It also functions in protecting the spinal cord from injury. The spinal cord includes nervous tissue which extends down the spinal column from the brain. Each vertebra has bony fame behind the spinal cord that shields the cord’s nervous tissue from impact trauma. Vertebrae have a strong bony vertebral body in front of the spinal cord to provide a platform appropriate for bearing the weight of all tissues above the buttocks. The lumbar vertebrae heap directly on the sacrum bone which is situated in between the buttocks. The sacrum meets the iliac bone of the pelvis to form the sacroiliac joints of the buttocks On each side.(Low Back Anatomy)
  • The disc pads which serve as cushions between the individual vertebral bodies. They support to minimize the impact of stress forces on the spinal column. The disc is designed like a jelly donut with a central, softer component (nucleus pulposus) and a surrounding, firm outer ring (annulus fibrosis). The central slice of the disc is capable of rupturing through the outer ring causing irritation of adjacent nervous tissue and  Ligament is a strong fibrous soft tissue that firmly attaches bones to bones. The Ligament attaches each of the vertebrae and surrounds each of the discs.(Low Back Anatomy)
  • The nerves provide sensation and stimulate the low back muscles extremities the legs, feet, and toes. all these exits the lumbar spinal column through bony portals, each is called a foramen.(Low Back Anatomy)
  • muscle groups which are responsible for flexing, extending, and rotating the waist and moving the lower extremities are attached to the lumbar spine through tendon insertions.(Low Back Anatomy)
  • The aorta blood vessels which transport blood to and from the lower extremities pass in front of the lumbar spine in the abdomen and pelvis. Surrounding these blood vessels are lymph nodes (lymph glands) and tissues of the involuntary nervous system that are important in maintaining bladder and bowel control.(Low Back Anatomy)
  • The uterus and ovaries are important pelvic arrangements in front of the pelvic area of women. In men, the prostate gland is a significant pelvic structure. The kidneys are on either side of the back of the lower abdomen, in front of the lumbar spine.
  • The skin covers the lumbar area is supplied by nerves that originate from nerve roots and departure from the lumbar spine.(Low Back Anatomy)
